I spent weeks with him in the early '90's in Cape Town, South Africa, and then met him in Montana and Seattle a few years later. He was always switched on, uncannily smart, funny, and perceptive. We liked to go out to meals together, sometimes at the student food service hall. He loved to get a good deal; he would laugh at how good a meal we could get for the equivalent of $1US because of the favorable exchange rate at the time! His knowledge of geochemistry was amazing, and he was always going somewhere and collecting minerals and rocks. His work on the mineralogy of urinary stones made that arcane subject get up and dance in a way that you wanted to rush out and read more about them.

He was a good enough scientist to know that he had lung cancer, but doctors delayed invasive tests because Al was not a smoker. He finally got them to do the tests, which confirmed lung cancer, but it was too late.
