Well, once again my belief that the most corrupt corporate organizations in the world are not oil companies or arms dealers, but none other than your friendly neighborhood insurance companies was completely verified. The depth of my hatred for these assholes knows no limits and burns with the firey passion of 1000 red-hot suns.

I hate you. I hate you so bloody much it makes my blood boil. I once believed that only tele-communications companies could sink to the charm level of hemmoroid infested assholes, but you morons take the cake. Here is the story.
My significant other was covered under a very expensive health-care plan by The Assholes. Coverage ceased on November 9, 2007. She purchased a new set of glasses on November 4, 2007, paid with her credit card and was billed on November 4, 2007. We returned the following week to pick up the new spectacles, and we were simply handed the glasses and sent on our way. As you may be aware, when you receive new glasses they always give you several receipts, because they too have to deal with The Assholes, and are aware of The Assholes complete and total incompetance (and fraudulent shiftiness). We sent our claim in during the middle of December, with the original receipts. It was of course lost. Now, try to imagine how much profits These Assholes make by ensuring inadequacies in their mail collection and delivery. "Oops, sorry Mr. X, we lost your claim, but all you have to do is go around collecting new original receipts, and by the way make sure you get them in before your 90 day grace period runs out, or we won't pay you squat." And what a surprise Mr. X, has four kids and run down '92 Corolla and doesn't have time to drive all over town picking up receipts. A company whose entire customer service business is based on the correct and timely delivery of mail seems to lose about two out of every five things sent to it. This year alone, with two seperate insurers, I have had to send duplicate claims in two or more times, because The Assholes are so corrupt, that they have acutally calculated how much profit they can make, by "losing" every 100th or 200th claim. But that's not where the fun stops for These Assholes, who apparently run the business in the same manner as the Gambino's. No, you see, after the lost the first claim, we sent another. They sent it back, apparently, the were unable to read the date on the brand new orignal receipt which indicated the precise date the glasses had been paid for. Luckily, I also had the credit card receipt, which I immediately sent back. Okay, so imagine now this is the third letter I sent them and it is now February, a full three months after actually receiving the glasses. Ah, but they aren't done yet. Just last week, March of 2008, we receive a final receipt of our claim, indicating that since we picked up the glasses on November 11 or her coverage ended on November 9, oh...so sorry...no coverage. Just so we're clear...you mean to tell me that even though I paid for them on the 4th and our coverage ended on the 9th, you won't cover the claim because, let me get this straight, you consider them purchased, when we pick them up? Are you friggin' kidding me? When we pick them up? What kind of Assholes are you? So, when I am in a car accident and have the vehicle repaired, I don't need to report to you until the car is fixed and back in my driveway, 'casue the accident didn't happen until I picked up the car fromt he mechanic? Did you freakin' moron, wak job, nerd number crunchers sit in a room with your pocket protectors and graphing calculators and figure out that people are likely to use their vision care credits within a week of their coverage ending, and you Assholes figured how much money you can save but making a slight adjustment to generally accepted accounting principles? Unbelieveable. And of course when you phone you end up talking to Ogla, the Russian, who doesn't speak English, except the few words needed to tell you to go F#$% yourself. Thank's Olga, you uncaring whore....
So, what am I to do. Well, the first thing I will do is spend some time looking for an insurance industry ombudsman on the internet. I have a feeling no such position exists and if it does, it is probably some overweight Asshole, with a cell number and a bottle of vicodin on his desk. Then what is next? It depends how long I stay pissed off, but right now, I plan on making this a very, very big deal.

I worked for the assholes thirteen years, and had a good friend working in the mail room. On a daily basis, employees would throw mail in the garbage. When mail came marked for the utilization review department, the mail room would make copies of surgical procedures sending them around to other employees, laughing at overweight people, women with breast surgery, men with operations. I have got thousands of notes from my 13 unlucky years at Great-West Life, and am almost done writing a book, and I hope to bring Great-West Life down. They have already been sold to Aetna, and I hope I am responsible for making the company bankrupt!! There used to be a lady that came to work everyday drunk, and they did nothing about it. There was insurance fraud, inappropriate HIPAA violations, sex and scandal. Torrid affairs.
David, I would love a copy of your book. I wonder if there is anyway of launching some kind of class action against Great West Life? I thought there was some kind of government body that overseas insurance companies. Are they being paid off, do you think?

I am also having a bad experience with great west life . I was sold a policy years ago for disability and guess what happens when I try to make a claim I've been denied. The disabilty insurance only covers about 1/3 of what I make obviously I want to get healed and back to work as quickly as possible ,but I'm thoroughly disgusted with GWL I've been told by them if I wish to submit any further evidence to support my claim it will be at my "expense" In retrospect what a fool I was to have ever purchased this policy all those years ago ,if I had deposited approximately $60 a month in a safe investment with compound interest I would probably have over $30,000 by now. I'm currently in the process of contacting an attorney now. I've found their staff less then helpful and offish since I first contacted them . If you want my opinion looks like a Ponzi scheme to me and it appears I'm not alone in my bad experience with them.
Yes, All insurance companies are Ponzi schemes. I had two years of only horrible experiences with Great West and their reimbursements for health care costs.
i am 22 years old and have no idea on how to deal with gwl i have a disability clame i am now three months into it and it seems that every time they review my case they need one more bit of info and that it is up to me to get for them because they didint get the info they needed in the first place and then denied my clame so it is up to me i have sergery later this month my doctor ofice ses they cant releas the info that they need too me and gwl will not contact them because they have already tryed with no respond .. i could reealy use some advice on what to do.. yours truly a nother distrot costimer

Thank God for your site. Am currently being ignored @ unpaid by GWL. I belong to a union. Sadly the union does nothing about GWL's callous behavior towards it's members. Am seeking legal counsel. I knew that mine could not be an isolated case. GWL staff are immoral and will take money for abusing the disabled. No lower scum exists. Amazing that they walk amongst us. Society should collectively spurn and humiliate anyone who works for an insurance company. They are the parasites of our time.

unfortunately wat GWL is perfectly legal, sadly according to business law the title was still at the companies because you agreed for them to hold it for you for whatever reason. With that reason of holding this prevents the company from giving u a product that may break in the time there holding it, because if you gained title then it would be your responsibility for whatever happens to it while they possess it but legal rules do not want that kind of thing to happen so if you agree for them to hold it for you, no written agreement needed then they are responsible and hold title, and when they deliver it to you when you come to pick it up then you gain title on it, and your insurance will cover it from that point. Its a sad fact but GWL did not break in existing rules like GAAP.
May 9, 2012 I had a meeting with a review committee (3 doctors)in Vancouver. After 4 years, I finally won my right to a successive claim. Since the meeting, I have heard from my union and Health and Benefit Trust advising me of this success. I have put out calls to Great West Life requesting info regarding what is happening with my claim and when am I getting my money; still no return calls.
I also felt that my union was totally useless and threatened them with Section 12 of the Labour Code..(they had not done anything on my behalf for over 18 months,(unbeknownst to me)within a few months, I finally got action from my union (BCNU).
I was paying over $600.00 a month trying to keep up my benefits while I was fighting GWL, used up all of my RRSP's, went into major credit card debt as well as debts owed to friends and family, just about lost my home, my vehicle is falling apart and then I had to go on Welfare.
My words of advice is that once you are accepted on long term disability, do not attempt to go back to work. I went back due to feeling very pressured by GWL, financial pressure and concerned about my RN status lapsing; my doctor told me to make sure that this was what I wanted as his words to me, "If you go back to work and are not successful, it will be a nightmare trying to get reinstated." Guess what, my life has been a living hell the last 4 flippin' years fighting GWL, and no one should have to go through that. Even the specialist reports that I had, specifically stated that they were referring to MRI's and I should never have gone back to work.
One thing I am grateful for is my stubborness and refusing to give up, and feeling that I paid into this plan and I am entitled to it. I believe that they hope that you are going to give up.
While insurance companies are certainly the bad guys of this day and age, I definitely find it disconcerting that there are people on here talking about wishing the people who worked in insurance were dead and that they should be able to kill people who work for a company that denies benefits. I hope that's people's (totally justified) anger talking...realize that the people on the front lines that you are dealing with are not evil people. It's likely that they are just like you - doing whatever they have to do to put food on their families table and aren't plotting your financial destruction. Focus your energy where it belongs - on the bigwigs who are making ridiculous amounts of money off the misery of others.

I have Doctors letters stating I am disabled and even thier own specialist said I will never work again but as soon as my file was transferred from Regina to Vancouver I get called at home on weekends and have medical requests weekly this is wrong!!!! They sell an disability insurance with the tests that you are being treated by a DR and or specialist and that you are fully disabled once these tests are proven I believe they should leave you alone I mean your disabled and living on far less then your regular income which is stressful in itself!!!! Talk about adding insult to injury now GWL harasses you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I dont know how the people whom work for GWL sleep at night!!!!!

I was wondering why the place where you purchased your glasses wrote on your receipt the day you picked up your glasses? In my case I paid in full the day I bought them, received a receipt for the purchase along with the other deets and I submitted it that day without headache most of the time.
On another note. Our firm swtched to GwL after having 3 other insurers for over 40 yrs. when we switched over all of my claims were either adjusted and received less back or not covered at all. Our employer insured us that all of our coverage will be the same and not to worry. This was not the case. The response we received from GWL is that those previous insurers were pushing through claims they should not have. Seriously? I find that hard to believe. I've been with my firm for 15 years and both liberty health and manulife had their issues but covered pretty much everything with regards to drug, glasses, and health services (massage, chirp, etc) GWL has now reduced the coverage in most drugs as of late. Between 2-30% And we have been reduced to 85% coverage from 100%!
My big gripe is with the reduction of coverage on drugs that do not have a generic counterpart. Seriously. This is just ridiculous. I seriously despise this insurer.
I am just going through some trouble with this company. I am on Long Term Disability, with my company, and a salary loss Income from VAC. I have been claiming for about 10 years or so. Now they are telling me that they shouldn't have been covering me. They want to go over my VAC file, so I need to sign a release info form. I am not sure what I can do if they decide they shouldn`t have been paying me all along. I have a list of contact`s I will send a negative letter off about this if they declare I will no longer be able to collect. When the woman from GWL called me, I was out at the dentist. I called back when I got in, and she says to me "did you just get in", like I shouldn't be out of the house!! Then she says she's been told I was able to convince the Doctor's that I have a Mental Illness. I called her on it, and then she say's she must have read it wrong. I have every piece of correspondence from my Doctor's, etc.... I had a mental illness waiting to rear it's ugly head, and due to a demanding, stressful office, I just lost my head, mentally. I have been to at least 5 different Psychiatrist who have written reports on me stating that they believe me to have a mental illness. I can't believe I had gotten them convinced that I was ill. Please!! I am so upset over this, but we will see what is said next week. I also will contact the Insurance Onbudsman, The Premier, Victoria paper, and Vancouver. It's not over until it's over!!!!

After my wife received knee surgery, they terminated her disability even before the surgery prognosis was complete. They sent an appeal form that we were to have the surgeon fax should (costs us $50 because OHIP does not cover admin fees). we faxed it, and waited... nothing. her knee is even worse now than before and we call GWL, well the file is closed - "No we never receiedved a fax - sorry your file is closed now" - Lying fucks - evil incarnate.

Im in a company pension plan that started 12 months ago with GWL. My 12 monthly report shows a .716 % gain with them while my other plan from another company shows 11.6%. GWL tried to kid me saying that the gain was 7.9% but in looking more closely that was with my monthly deposits included in the gain . I want out!
My company uses great west life and it is the WORST INSURANCE COMPANY.
Every thing I try to do with them is an issue. I tried to switch my rrsps and it took like 5 different times because they kept loosing my letter in the mail.
Every claim hence forth has been an issue. I downloaded the app that says im covered 500 in massages. low and behold i file a claim and they give me $70, not my full claim of 114.
I called several times and they gave me a spiel of how they cap massages at 90 and only pay out 80%. I was on hold for a manager, which of course never called me back within 24 hours.
i'm so frustrated with this company. I made two massage claims and now i'm out almost $100. I will do everything in my power to persuade my company to switch insurance providers.. They are scammers, the reps are rude, and they never get back to you.
This is in response to the 22 year old who stated his doctor said he cannot give you your medical information ( so you can provide to GWL). Remind your doctor of the Freedom of Information act, you ARE entitled to a complete copy of your medical file if you want it. You may have to pay photocopy fees etc. but they Legally have to give it to you. If you know what info GWL is requesting that supposedly your doctor did not provide, find out what they wanted, was there a form etc. then you can try to get it from your doctor. As well again via Freedom of Information Act, u r entitled to copy of your GWL file. Good luck
I must say I don't understand how a company like this stays in business! They are so uncaring and horrible to deal with this. They delayed paying a legit claim for no reason and with now apology. I told them that I couldn't feed my kids and that I needed to go to a food bank that weekend. The rep still didn't care. I asked to speak to a supervisor and I was told "no". My Wife was so upset and bawling and they didn't care or do a single thing. We have 4 young kids and they have to go hungry because of their error. WHY are they like this?! We have this insurance carrier through our employer. I just don't get it and it's so upsetting and makes me beyond angry. I don't understand what kind of employee would want to work there knowing it's blood money that they're getting paid with from the client's pain and suffering/loss. Our grocery money is paying their salaries and they don't care at all. Their must be a psychopath test you must pass to insure that they don't feel sympathy for the distressed clients. Disgusting. There must be something we/I can do? How many other people/families has this happened to and will continue to do hurt in the future???!!!
unfortunately I am one of the people that tried to go back to work, and then I was forced to be off again with the same medical issue. My doctor, and their specialist says the original has reoccurred and I am to stay off for another 3-6 months. It has been 2 months, several doctor's notes and forms, and still have not been paid. When should I contact the Ombudsman? I think I have waited more than a reasonable amount of time, and now they are saying it could be another month. When I asked why it was taking so long, she said it was because she was back on holidays, and she was back logged. What has this to do with me? Don't they have people to take their place? As I explained to her, the paperwork she asked for was on her her desk 3 days before she left. Hope the holiday was nice. I can't afford to take one.

Wow. Im so saddened to see all the negetive comments regarding GWL. I am a current employee with the company and I feel bad for all of you. I am in no way of management just one of their monkeys. But I see and handle claims every day. I completely understand everyones frustration as I see it daily! As a person with small children I get how important it is for you to receive the money from your health/dental/disability claim. I do my best to make sure that everyone's claims I receive are handled with care. But unfortunately I too see alot of 'Missing/lost claims' I dont know where they go or what happens, but I do no that you have to pay for a stamp and gas to get duplicate receipts and thats not easy for anyone. We really are doing our best to resolve this issue. There are certain people in the company im sure that may not care, But I truely do and I hope anyone still with GWL will have better future experiences. Please remember that most of us are just like you just trying to do what we are told we have to do.
I am currently fighting Great West Life for coverage for a life saving treatment they have unjustly denied my husband. Yet, I am appalled at how people in this website have such misplaced hatred for the GWL staff. Your hatred, death wished and derogatory language makes you equally unjust and cruel. It is not the staff (no matter how incompetent or rude) who are making or breaking the rules so that the CEO and top executives keep getting richer. It is not them, but rather the lack of just governing from or Federal and provincial government who favours them over the needs of the vulnerable...Get your facts straight people and don't let your hatred blind you and make you just as awful!!!!
I understand that GWL has their issues, but so does every insurance carrier. For the people who try to use their sob story about how they can't feed their kids so they need their disability payments, GWL is not a charity. They don't approve your claim based on your financial need of money. They pay based on the terms of the insurance contract. There are definitions of disability. Most mistakes happen because you are an idiot. You don't read the forms and don't complete them properly. You don't make copies of your forms and think that Canada Post never loses a piece of mail.
You know how many people try to scam insurance companies?? With fake injuries and illnesses that are tough to dispute or diagnose. You know who pays for these scammers? It's all of the honest people. Systems and controls are in place to pay LEGITIMATE claims. And everyone who thinks they can't work because they have a cold and want to take 6 weeks off is NOT entitled to disability payments. You're just lazy so get back to work! If your claim is truly legitimate, it'll be paid. Don't just think you can call any insurance carrier and say you can't work, so they should pay your benefits. There needs to be medical proof. And what you think "proves" you can't work, might not be sufficient. Chances are, you're just lazy and will find any reason to try and claim disability.
And all because you're disabled now, doesn't mean you're disabled for the rest of your life. They have case managers that try to get your back to work. You're not supposed to just sit on your ass for the rest of your life and not try to get better and have the insurance carrier continue to pay for your living. So the people who complain that they should just leave you alone once the claim is approved, you're delusional if you think that's what should happen. So if I break my hand and can't work my office job, they should just stop asking me when I can go back to work and collect benefit payments the rest of my life??? You think I'm entitled to that?? If you think that's what disability insurance is for, you're an idiot. Disability insurance is to cover your income when you're not able to work. So when you're able to work, you're expected to go back to work. Pretty simply isn't it? So how would they know if you're able to go back to work or not, if they don't call you?? You're a bunch of sad people here complaining even though you're the true parasites of this world. You're lazy and blame everyone else for your problems.

I agree with all these posts on here, Great West Life case managers are bastards and should be ashamed of how they treat people, they act like they're giving their own money away which is peanuts and put you through so much hell and stress while you're trying to cope and get better. I have treatment resistant depression and anxiety partly caused by being bullied at work. This is only stressing me out more and making my condition worse. I'm not faking it. I would love to be healthy and able to work full time again. Getting ill was not my choice and I'm devestated with how I now have to live.
Not sure how they can screw their own employees and still expect us to do a great job for them.
